RE: TC, ATV's and boondocking...

RE: Diesel Pickup and Slide in what to get?

I'm starting down the path of getting a diesel pickup and slide in camper which i plan to live in and travel around checking out different areas of the country and visiting national parks. A 4x4 is something i'd like to end up with so i could use it to drive the back country roads in some of the parks. I have no idea what i want to get yet. I want something that can get the best mpg's. From the little digging i have done so far i see most pickups get about 15-20mpg and you lose about 5 mpg when towing. I'd like any info i can get about experience with specific trucks. I am not opposed to getting something used or about 10 years old if it means better mileage/ cheaper price/ reliabllity/ ease of repair... I also plan to convert the pickup to run on veg oil. I also don't know much about the slide in campers. I was pointed over to this site to ask for suggestions, so suggest away. From a fuel economy point of view: I have a pop-up camper in a 96 2wd F250. With the camper in the bed and limiting my speed to 60 I can get an honest 18 mpg. Adding a small trailer (like in my signature picture) net us 16.4 mpg going from MI to WA/OR and back this summer.

RE: finding laptop w/XP?

Anyone know of any sources where one can purchase a basic laptop with Win XP? Dell still had them for a while but I no longer see them. Go to Dell's "business" site.

RE: Out side shower

Sorry about the mess up there. It is the shower head that leaks. When you turn the head leaver off it still leaks. Thanks for the replies so far. I am takeing this with me to the dealership. Mine leaks there too; never bothered me.

RE: Palomino t/c's

I bought a Palomino (pop up, not slide) because I wanted to keep my money in Michigan. There have been caulking problems, cabinet problems and general fittiment problems. Nothing serious, and really nothing I don't mind fixing. :) edit - forgot to say that we love our camper!. :)

RE: 3/4 ton vs. 1 ton questions.

On Fords from '99-up and all Dodges, you get a solid front axle on both 3/4-ton and 1-ton trucks. On GM trucks, you don't get a solid front axle at all on any pickup after '87 for reg cabs and extended cabs and after '91 for crew cabs, Blazers and Suburbans. Damn. I want to buy GM, since I work for them (just like I bought a Ford when I worked for them - I really wanted a 5.9 Cummins) I disagree that duallies are bad in mud and snow. It depends on what kind of tires are on them and if the rear differential is open or locked and how much weight is in the bed. A dually can do fine off road if set up right and driven by someone who knows how to drive in low traction terrain. Well, that is encouraging - I managed a few trails in Moab in my old Jeep that I was told I would never make. :B Patience and common sense work wonders sometimes. (though I did get stuck on our vacation that required a wrecker to winch me out)

RE: 3/4 ton vs. 1 ton questions.

Thank you for all the replies, especially that DRW trucks have difficulty in mud and snow. I was also under the impression that 1-ton trucks will also give you a solid front axle. I like that idea just for the simplicity over a driven IFS. Yeah, I have a pop-up for now, but who knows what may be next? :)

3/4 ton vs. 1 ton questions.

Well, We just returned from a 7,000 mile trip starting in Michigan, ending up in Washington and Oregon for a few weeks and then back again. Around Devil's tower (on the way back) I started noticing some weird vibrations and traced it to a failed pinion seal. 1200 miles and a few bottles of gear lube later, we're home and I need to replace the rear end in my 96 F250. I bought the truck almost 5 years ago and think maybe it is time to move on. I also now work for GM and would like to show support for my employer (though I can't/don't want to afford a new truck at this time). I am seeing the 1 ton trucks can be had for competitive prices in my area and I have started to wonder if I should buy one over a 3/4 ton. I think it would leave my options open for later (if I want a heavier TC), but I would like input on pros/cons of 3/4 vs. 1 ton trucks. I can see DRW will cost more when it comes time to replace tires, but what else? I will be looking for a 4x4 6.6L diesel auto; my 7.3L has served me well (and got 16.6 mpg with a popup TC and 6x10 enclosed trailer over this past vacation). Thank you in advance. :) Scot

RE: Installing AC on a Palomino Bronco B1500??

I have the same camper and was told by my dealer that a 9000 btu would be a good choice - the rearward vent is pre-wired with AC (pun intended) power so it should be an easy install. (I do not have A/c)

RE: HID Headlights

I was aware of Stern when I first decided to upgrade my lights and would have gone with lights mounted on a prerunner bar but then saw a truck like mine down at Jawbone with the lights I got. That sold me plus the fact that lights on a bar are tempting to vandals. But did you try the relays? Anyhoo, I retrofitted HID lights into my wife's car and IMHO they light up much more details than the stock H1's they replaced. I wanted 4800K, but found a really good deal on a 5000K set ($200). Have you installed your HIDs yet? I would still recommend running a relay to power your ballasts. (relay on far left) http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g2/scot_douglas/12_22_2006002.jpg Here are the stock leads to the headlights in my wife's car, maybe 18ga? http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g2/scot_douglas/IMG_0114.jpg

RE: Best Highway speed for mileage

4) lower wind resistance; you're pushing your truck through thinner air. :D

RE: HID Headlights

I read the entire thread and didn't see the following mentioned: http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/tech.html Lot of great info there, including the proper way to aim your lights and how to use relays to make your OEM headlights brighter. Also, the brightness of your headlights deteriorate over time. Your bulbs may not burn out in four years, but their output will have significantly dropped.

RE: Dumb newbie question, r rating hard v. pop up

Also, is the fuel saved toting a pop-up greater than the extra fuel expended heating it?
